Egg Freezing Supplements: What the Evidence Actually Says
The supplement industry around egg freezing is large, expensive, and mostly unregulated. The gap between what is marketed as essential and what the evidence actually supports is enormous. Before you spend £200 a month on a fertility supplement stack — here is what the research actually says.
The Supplements With Real Evidence
CoQ10 Ubiquinol — the strongest evidence of any single supplement for egg quality. Take 400–600mg daily for at least 90 days before retrieval. Ubiquinol specifically — not ubiquinone.
Vitamin D — deficiency is extremely common in the UK and associated with worse IVF outcomes. Test your level first. Supplement at 2,000–4,000 IU daily if deficient.
Omega-3 fatty acids — support the anti-inflammatory environment in which follicles develop. 1–2g of combined EPA and DHA daily if you are not eating oily fish twice a week.
Methylfolate — preferable to standard folic acid, particularly for women with MTHFR gene variants. 400–800mcg daily.
The Supplements With Weak or Limited Evidence
DHEA — only for women with diminished ovarian reserve. Not appropriate for all women. Discuss with your RE before taking.
Myo-inositol — specific evidence for PCOS patients only. Limited evidence for women without PCOS.
Melatonin — emerging evidence for poor responders and women over 38. 3mg nightly, 6–8 weeks before retrieval.
Royal jelly and boutique fertility blends — mostly marketing. Human evidence is extremely limited.
What Matters More Than Supplements
Adequate protein — 1.2–1.6g per kg of body weight daily. The most evidence-supported nutritional intervention for egg freezing.
Mediterranean eating pattern — high in vegetables, fish, olive oil, and legumes. More impactful than any supplement stack.
Stopping alcohol 90 days before retrieval — not just during stimulation. The evidence supports the longer window.
Hydration with electrolytes during stimulation — more impactful during the active cycle than most dietary changes.
